Todmorden Patient Participation Group. - Monday, November 14, 2011

Todmorden Patient Participation Group held a meeting on the 8th November 2011 when Dr P Dinesh Kumar, assisted by sister Vicky Challenger gave a very interesting talk on DIABETES.   At the Health Centre Practice there are 600 patients with this illness and in England 5% of 3 million and probaly 1 million who have not been diagnosed.  The meeting was well attended and each person recieved a "DIABETES RISK SCORE SHEET" to complete for themselves or a family members, which will hopefully help to identify those at risk.  There are different types of DIABETES but the usual are TYPE 1   DM   and  T YPE 2   DM.  Doctors aim to keep the problem under control by either  tablets or insulin to avoid any complications.  DIABETICS  need to keep a check on blood pressure, cholesterol as well as blood sugar count.  Annual checks take place for retinal eye screening,  Examination of feet and urine for protein to keep good kidney function.  It is very important for a family members to be monitered as they are on a RISK GROUP,  if one member is   DIABETIC.   At  the end of his talk Dr Kumar answered questions,  which was appreciated by those in attendence.  Anyone interested in joining the group should contact the secretary, Barbara Brierley (01706 812751)
